Cooperative cathodes for enhanced hexavalent chromium reduction and electricity generation in bioelectrochemical reactor with simultaneous sludge degradation

A novel bioelectrochemical reactor assembled with cooperative cathodes of chemical cathode and bio-cathode (BER CC ) excess sludge as the anodic substrate obtained continuous effective Cr(VI) reduction. Cooperative in BER stimulated growth electrochemically active microorganisms such Geobacter sp. Shewanella biofilm produced 8.21 ± 0.64 mg C/(L·h) more electrons than dual cathodes, which enhanced for electricity generation reduction by approximately 58.3% 56.1 5.6%, respectively.
